There are many Free Wordpress Themes available but I always recommed to go for the "Premium Themes" for professional purposes and for making a good impression to your readers. There are many resources to grab a Wordpress Theme. And you also have an option to search Wordpress free themes directory from your WP dashboard, you can also download a .zip file for theme and upload it directly by going with any of the below given two methods.
Tip:- You can use "Theme Test Drive plugin to make changes in your live Wordpress theme like changing theme without showing to your readers.
There are 2 methods for Installation of a Wordpress Theme:
1. Using WP Dashboard.
2. Using FTP.
Step-by-Step Guide to Install Wordpress theme using WP Dashboard:
1. Login to your Wordpress Dashboard.
2. Click on 'Appearance'
3. Next click on 'Themes'
4. Now click on 'Install Themes'
5. Click 'Upload' button.
6. Finally click on' Browse' to locate your theme file.
7. Locate your downloaded theme file which is in '.zip' format and Select it.
8. Click on "INSTALL NOW" to start installation process.
Your theme will be uploaded on your server and it will open a new page asking you to "Activate" your new theme.
You can also use 'Preview' before making it live but usually this feature doesn't shows how your new theme exactly looks.
Step-by-Step Guide to Install Wordpress theme using FTP:
This method can be used when you are installing multiple themes or you are editing themes.
This method can also be used when you are not given permission to use the above method or your server's security doesn't allow the above method.
Going with FTP method you should have FTP softwares like FileZilla or your cPanel services {hosting services} should enable you to access FTP from the web panel {Dashboard of your hosting}. You also need to extract {unpack} your downloaded '.zip' file which contains your theme by using softwares like 'WinRAR'.
After extracting {unpacking} the theme folder you directly have to upload it to your themes folder of your website {blog} which is by default located in your 'WP-content' folder of your Wordpress directory.
Things to be done before to start:
1. Your downloaded theme should to be unpacked {extracted}.2. You should have your FTP manager ready.
Step-by-Step Guide to do above mentioned things:
1. Launch your FTP manager.
2. Navigate to wp-content/themes folder of your website {blog}.
3. Upload your downloaded theme which is in extracted {unpacked} form. {It should not in any compressed form.}
Now your theme is uploaded and you have to activate it.
Step-by-Step Guide to Install your uploaded theme:
1. Login to your Wordpress dashboard.
2. Click on 'Appearance'.
3. Now click on 'Themes'.
It will show you a list of your uploaded themes and you can here 'Preview' and 'Activate' your uploaded themes here.
How to delete {uninstall/remove} Wordpress themes:
This method can be used to remove the unused themes.
This method also contains of two types:
1. Using WP Dashboard.
2. Using FTP.
How to delete/remove Wordpress theme using WP Dashboard:
1. Login to your Wordpress Dashboard.
2. Click on 'Appearance'.
3. Then click on 'Themes'.
4. Click on 'Delete' on the themes you want to delete.
How to delete/remove Wordpress theme using FTP:
1. Launch your FTP Manager.
2. Navigate to 'wp-content/themes'.
3. Delete the themes you want to delete.
{Special Note: Don't delete any live (current) theme, switch the live (current) theme to another and then delete it, if you want it to be deleted}
